How much would this suck?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

You’re stuck on the ISS, falling around the Earth in cramped quarters with assorted colleagues and the toilet, the ONLY toilet for at least 211(+/- 2.4) miles, is broken.

The moving never ends

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Well, I have two posts that I’ve been meaning to put up, but both require pictures.  Which normally wouldn’t be a problem, except that a.) I can’t find the cable for my camera and b.) I can’t seem to log in to my flickr.com account.  Fun!

At any rate, life’s been pretty insane the last week, hence the light posting.  I got back from Memorial Day/Sasquatch! Festival weekend and had to do five days worth of stuff in four days, and, considering I was behind when I LEFT for Sasquatch, well, it’s been a hell of a week.  Still, it seems to be straightening out.  This weekend I should be able to finally get back to work on my thesis (which I’m hoping *fingers crossed* to have done this summer.)  I’ll also be helping my lovely flatmate Kenlyn move in, cleaning up my own moving debris (still scattered liberally around), and playing with my new stereo setup.

I’ll also hopefully get some reading done.  I’m just starting the first volume of The Last Lion, William Manchester’s biography of Winston Churchill.  It’s quite good, even if Manchester sometimes lets his love for his subject get the better of him.  (It’s by far the most sycophantic biography I think I’ve ever read.  That it has still so far managed to be a phenomenal read is testament both to Manchester’s writing skills and to just how interesting a man Churchill really was.)

At any rate, such is the news.  If I can get the camera/Flickr situation sorted out, then there will probably be another post or two up this weekend.

Had an AMAZING memorial day weekend. Some friends and I hit up the Sasquatch! Music Festival. (You know it’s awesome because it’s got an exclamation point right in the name.) We had an awesome time. REM was brilliant, the Presidents of the United States of America were fantastic, the Cure had amazing endurance (seriously? an almost three hour set from the still-sickly looking, middle-aged Robert Smith? I was impressed.)

In between dancing our arses off there was much camping. I mean seriously, we camped the HELL out of that patch of ground that they gave us. (Photo evidence to follow.)

Anyway, back in town. Photos to hit my flickr page later tonight, most likely. For now, it’s off to work to play catchup.

After the bloody, hard-fought match yesterday, I just couldn’t resist poking a little fun at everyone’s favorite Manchester United forward.

The skeptic portion of my soul is amused.

A complete weekend adventure

Monday, May 19th, 2008

As the inimitable Becky told me upon my return: “No adventure is complete without a bruise.” Which means that this last weekend in Seattle was, I’m happy to say, complete.

I headed over Friday night to visit my brother Brian and his lovely wife Amy and to pick up some furniture. Saturday, with furniture acquired (aside: why did no one tell me how awesome Ikea actually is?), Brian and I decided to take his new boat out for awhile. After putting our way around and seeing some of the boats that Brian’s done work on, we took it out to Lake Union to open up the throttle a little bit.

We ran into a little bit of chop, but nothing serious. Save for one impressive swell which came out of nowhere. And, well, I was standing up when we hit the swell. Not so much afterward. And I have a fairly impressive (and, from the feel of it, deep) bruise and lump on my right butt cheek, which connected solidly with the metal bar that runs between a couple of the seats. Weekend complete.

All in all, though, a good trip, capped off with a nice day on the water. I’ve got some pictures, which I’ll be putting up on my Flickr page, once I figure out which box I put the data cable for my camera in.

I have Internet in the new place!  Teh w00t!

Alas, I have to go back to work, so I can’t really enjoy it yet, but I have it!

There is much rejoicing.

The Great Internet Deprivation of 2008 is almost at an end.  I have been told that I can expect the harbinger of my salvation (the Comcast Internet/Cable Installation guy) to appear at my apartment sometime this afternoon.  No doubt his arrival will be heralded by glorious trumpets and beams of light from on high.

Stay tuned for a resumption of (ir)regularly scheduled blogging.

Failure of Rules 1 and 3

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

and possibly rule 2 as well, depending on how the officer felt about his ankle.

Those of you who have heard this rant before and/or are up on your firearm safety are free to skip the following.

Firearm Safety is not optional.  Jeff Cooper was right when he codified the Four Rules and when he said in his commentaries they were all we need and that we need all of them.  If you follow the four rules (and they ought ALWAYS be followed slavishly), things like this simply won’t happen.  Negligent Discharges like this can only happen if one or more of the rules are being violated.

Simply put, a shooter must strive to have the rules so ingrained in their minds when they’re doing anything with a firearm that to violate any of the rules is literally unthinkable and undoable.

I wish the officer mentioned in the story a full and speedy recovery, but I also hope that he’ll be more careful in the future.

Down Time

As you may have noticed, there’s been no blogging here the past few days. I’m in the process of moving and have no internet at the new place yet, so blogging my be a bit on the light side for a few days.

To tide you over until I’m back on top of my blogging game, here’s a logic puzzle game that I found inexplicably addicting.
