Fabulous book! Be forewarned, however: By Volume 2, Churchill has become very famous. He was also a very fast and prolific writer. By midlife, every time he sneezed, someone documented the event--and someone else no doubt enshrined the handkerchief in a museum somewhere. Dear William Manchester couldn't bear to leave out a single detail if it was recorded somewhere.

It's no wonder that he got bogged down completely in Volume 3. For a decade, I waited for that promised conclusion, but Manchester kept churning out other books instead. He died in 2004, with the opus unfinished. (They say the third volume may yet be published by another writer working from his draft and notes, but it won't be the same.)

Anyway--happy reading!
