Growing Division in Iran

Just wanted to point out that there’s a continuing rift in the Iranian religious and political authorities regarding the current regime’s abuse of its people and their rights.  Most recently, Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, one of the most influential men in Shi’a Islam, published a fatwa condemning the actions of the Iranian government against its people.

Montazeri is one of the more liberal Ayatollahs and has a history of speaking out against Khameini and Ahmadinejad.  He’s often been especially critical of their human rights abuses and their sacrificing of their nations economy and international standing in the pursuit of nuclear arms.

So while it’s not surprising that such a fatwa would come from Mantazeri in particular, it is heartening to see that such a fatwa is being issued by someone.

The world is watching.  Islam is watching.  And the Iranian government’s crimes are not going unnoticed.

I dearly hope that they won’t go unpunished.
