Just ran across this video from an Irish organization called MarriageEquality. Eloquent, clever, and topical. I like it.
This is an issue I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. It’s one of those strange issues where I feel for whatever reason that it’s not my place to be passionate about it or to say anything for or against it. Which is ludicrous, of course. In so far as recognized marriages and the privileges conferred on those in them can be considered a civil right, then it is the place of EVERY citizen to be passionate about them.
Whatsoever civil rights we guarantee to some people in this country need to be guaranteed to all people. If a nation is to be a just one, then civil rights must be accorded equally or not at all. If we are to allow some couples of consenting adults enter into politically sanctioned and politically privileged marriages, then that right needs to be extended to all couples.
