Commenting Issues

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Just a heads up, the blog’s been experiencing some commenting issues.  Not only am I no longer getting email notification of new comments, but approved comments have been disappearing.  Some time in the next couple of days I’m going to upgrade both my blogs to the latest WordPress version, so we’ll see if that helps.

In the meantime, if any of your comments fail to appear, or disappear, or I fail to respond, it’s nothing personal, just the blog being evil.

Assorted Kruft

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Okay, a few things.  1.) I would have been blogging more in this space but I’ve been slammed with work of various kinds.  Also, I recently discovered the hilarity that is Zero Punctuation, which is a weekly video game review.  It’s hilarious to the point that I’m pretty sure I enjoyed the four minute review of some games more than I enjoyed the game itself.  Case in point.

2.) If any rich admirers out there are wondering what to get me for Christmas, I’d like one of these in .300 Win Mag or this ludicrously nice amp or a copy of the Secret Museum of Mankind if you can find one.

3.) Well, my Washington State ballot arrived a couple of days ago.  (WA ballots are all mail-in.)  Which means I finally have to figure out who I’m voting for for President.  I still haven’t ruled out writing in one of the Roosevelts.

Heads Up

Hey folks: word on the internewts is that the Word Press install here-abouts is going to be upgraded, so if the blog explodes in the near-ish future, you can safely blame Word Press.

Out for the Weekend

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Off camping with some friends, so no posts this weekend. Back probably late-ish Sunday.

Have a great weekend, all.

The moving never ends

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Well, I have two posts that I’ve been meaning to put up, but both require pictures.  Which normally wouldn’t be a problem, except that a.) I can’t find the cable for my camera and b.) I can’t seem to log in to my flickr.com account.  Fun!

At any rate, life’s been pretty insane the last week, hence the light posting.  I got back from Memorial Day/Sasquatch! Festival weekend and had to do five days worth of stuff in four days, and, considering I was behind when I LEFT for Sasquatch, well, it’s been a hell of a week.  Still, it seems to be straightening out.  This weekend I should be able to finally get back to work on my thesis (which I’m hoping *fingers crossed* to have done this summer.)  I’ll also be helping my lovely flatmate Kenlyn move in, cleaning up my own moving debris (still scattered liberally around), and playing with my new stereo setup.

I’ll also hopefully get some reading done.  I’m just starting the first volume of The Last Lion, William Manchester’s biography of Winston Churchill.  It’s quite good, even if Manchester sometimes lets his love for his subject get the better of him.  (It’s by far the most sycophantic biography I think I’ve ever read.  That it has still so far managed to be a phenomenal read is testament both to Manchester’s writing skills and to just how interesting a man Churchill really was.)

At any rate, such is the news.  If I can get the camera/Flickr situation sorted out, then there will probably be another post or two up this weekend.

Can’t stop the signal

Hey folks, registration is no longer required for commenting. If you don’t register/login, I would appreciate it if you signed your comments, but if you’d rather comment anonymously, that’s fine too.

There’s no playground moniter around here, so . . .

Anonymous comments are now enabled, so registration is now optional. If you do choose to comment without registering, I would greatly appreciate it if you signed your comment. That being said, such is not required and if you want to comment anonymously, feel free.

Comments

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Been trying to mess with the commenting system here in this fancy new blog software. I haven’t yet found how to allow anonymous comments in WP 2.5, so for the time being, you’ll have to register.

I’m also looking to redesign the site, so that some of the more pertinent controls are more visible. For now, the link to login is in the right-hand column under the “Meta” heading.

Sorry for any inconvenience while I get this sorted out.

Okay, both Mr. Chris Sullins and WordPress itself have now informed me that the latest and greatest version is out, so I’m gonna go ahead and update. So if things go all ’splodey, please be patient. I’ll try to get all the pieces reassembled ASAP.

UPDATE:  Looks like everything went smoothly.

Aaron reveals his woeful lack of web coding skillz

So as much as I like the default blogger template (it’s not bad, it’s just, well, not great, either), all the other templates that come with my WordPress install range from “tacky” to “OH GOD MY EYES”.  Besides, I’d kind of like to customize the look of my blogs.

So, any good introductions out there to skinning/templating WordPress blogs?  I’m assuming it’s mostly CSS and PHP hackery, so anyone know of any good intros for those?

Speaking of blogs, Fifty-Two Tuesdays is all migrated and is currently settling into its new digs over at http://www.thetarquin.com/FiftyTwoTuesdays .

Go on over there, check it out, and let me know if you have any problems.
